Using a single stereo or mono input, the RB-HD1 is a 1U rack-mount stereo headphone amplifier that can power up to two pairs of professional stereo headphones. There is one headphone jack on the front panel and one on the back. Electronically balanced XLR-3 connections, which can be wired unbalanced, are used for the primary stereo input on the back panel. A pot on the front panel or an external VCA signal connected to the remote connector can be used to adjust the headphones' output volume.

For example, talkback to the headphones can be mixed in by mixing a mono input into the primary headphone feed. This has a recessed adjustable potentiometer for controlling the input level. There is also a remote control available for the mono-mix input. On the back panel, a stereo/mono switch is recessed to reduce unintentional banging. Audio is supplied to both the left and right earpieces when mono is selected. The power supply connection is shown via an LED power indicator on the front panel.
