Why do people purchase Powered Speakers
Usually powered speakers are purchased because the client does not want to deal with external amplification and cables. The 2 x downfalls of powered speakers are:
1. if the power goes out, then your out completely
2. If installing these , then you would have to have power ran to the ceiling, or where ever they are being installed
What to look for in a Powered Speaker
When looking to purchase a set of powered speakers you will have to answer the following questions
1. What's my budget for Powered speakers?
Since good self-powered speakers range in price and quality, your first decision is pretty much what you are willing to spend for the powered speakers. A good price per speaker would be between $400.00 plus and can go as high as $4000.00.
2. Do I need powered subwoofers as well?
needing a Subwoofer really depends on your needs. Some churches dont need that bottom end to get that nice full range sound when the band is playing. Also if your church or building is mostly speech, and light music then you would not needs subs, but if your church has a band and they are going to go through the main PA then you would most likely benefit in having 1 or more subwoofers to get that nice big sound where the listeners can feel and get into the music.
3. How much power do I need?
Again the Power you need would depend on the music being played and the size of the room. Sometimes if the room is longer than 50+ feet you would need powered delays so that you're not overwhelming the front people to get sound in the back. A good distribution in sound is key to a smooth sound in the room
4. Am I going to hang/ install the speakers or will they be on the floor? Some powered speakers do not have hang points to be able to fly them or wall mount them. SO before you invest money in your powered speakers make sure you get a model that has hang points or available bracket for any future plans on installing them
